@izzy I can certainly put a commandline option in if you really want it, but I just figured it makes them easier to grief, and it feels more AoS-y if you have to dig them out for yourself.

I must have missed that the open-door vans were solid when i tested. Is it actually that way in the kv6 or did I screw up the loader still?

@1337101 I mainly meant what sort of license/restrictions you wanted to put on the kv6 files themselves. The comment about the map is that people can't work around restrictions on the kv6 files by extracting the vehicles back off the map into their own files -- the map is a "compilation" of the existing vehicles and those rules still apply.

There have been problems with parts of some of the models falling off when the models were hollow. It's possibly to fix this, but it makes the cars look a little uglier. I also didn't like how griefed the cars got when they were hollow.

Eh, it's all up to the hosts what's done with the vehicles. I designed some of them not to need modification to be used... the pickups have beds which require no building or breaking to access, and the two-high sides make them perfect for a marksman. The open vans with boxes make nice hiding places, and you only have to make a single jump noise to get into them. Alternatively, you could punch holes in the sides of the open vans to shoot from them.

The sedans and SUVs and things are solid, though... work around them, for the most part, and the SUVs have enough clearance that a player can crouch, sneak under them, and hide behind the tires. This form of cover will be nice for the SMG users, who have to crouch to be effective anyways. The sedans are really the least "useful" of all the cars, so they might get griefed a bit. You could always jump up on them and gun down you enemies Rambo-style, but that's not good for your life insurance premium.

So the "intended" use is that you not go breaking them all into tiny pieces... but whatever, it's really up to the host.

I'm releasing a version 1.0 parking garage generator and several pre-generated maps.

This is a map which is a giant parking garage. I wrote the generator for the structure; 1337101 made the vehicles.

garage_1.jpg
garage_2.jpg
map

Downloads:
5 VXL files (2.5MB) with pre-generated maps with different densities of cars vs. empty spaces
commandline map generator, includes 27 different vehicles

You should feel free to host these maps.

@1337101, you should chime in on what you want people to be able to do/not do with your vehicles (which are included in the gen_garage.zip) and maps which includes your vehicles (is it ok for people to modify them / repurpose them etc). For me I don't care, people can do anything they want, but since they're your vehicles it's really up to you. Also, if you have any updates to the vehicles let me know and I'll incorporate them in a new release.

(The pre-release version of this map was discussed in this thread.)

Whoops.

Hmm. I don't think that would fix it, because then it should try to load an extra color, does that really work?

Basically, the code should never work if top_colors_start == top_colors_end. It's designed around the assumption there will always be some top_colors.

I believe the correct fix is to add the following to is_surface, after is "if (map[...])" check:

if (z == 0) return 1;

which just says "if a solid voxel is at the top edge of the map, it is visible, so it is a surface voxel". I believe this was even mentioned in the voxlap documentation, and I just forgot to enforce it.

But I haven't tested the fix.

I currently use the save_vxl function for pyspades, and I've found a rather fatal, admittedly rare, bug with it. Sometimes, top_colors_end can be 0, and since the code sets it to top_colors_end - 1, it wraps and becomes 255. Doing a simple

if (top_colors_end == 0)
    *out = 0;
else
    *out = top_colors_end - 1;

fixes the problem, so it's a rather trivial problem also :)

one query though, how do i use the gens when making a server?

The server asks you what vxl map file to load. So before you run the server, you run one of the generators to create a vxl file, then you load that on the server.

When Ben puts in victory conditions / automatic map resets, this will change. If all goes according to plan then at that point you'll be able to hook these generators up to to the server so it can automatically generate a new map itself.

C source code to all 7 generators

All in the public domain; do anything you want with them. (See license.txt for a more legally explicit "do anything at all".)

Each generator is a single C source file; just compile that file (they #include their common shared code so you don't need a makefile).

I built these with MSVC 6, but they should work with any Visual C. In fact, they should work on mac and linux too, except I'm not sure everything in the library file stb.h builds properly cross-platform.

I attempted to move everything into a common library and get rid of all the cut-and-pasting and duplicate code between the seven generators; in the process I changed how the terrain generation works so you won't get the same map for a given seed as the executables I released. It's also possible I introduced bugs while doing it, although I tested every generator once.
