If you can make the php script to output the exact image that is displayed as the download button, and pass the version number via url arguments, then do it.

It might not be broken but it is easier than editing the file every week.

PHP GD is easy and takes 5 mins to script up.

And if we are having an auto update it makes not dereference if it is a xml or txt.

xml would be better though as it's lighter than txt.

an xml contains too much excessive data, I use just a standard text file, with the version number in it. Also PHP GD would be too excessive work for a simple change text in a .psd file and save as a .png. There's no need to fix what's not broken.

Why don't you use PHP GD to change the image?

You could use XML and make a auto updater for people and it would all work together as the updateclient would look at .xml to see if it needs to update.
