It's a lag problem. The fact that it actually teleports you is connected to anti-speedhacking measures.

Hopefully Ben can find a better way to run the speedhackers into brick walls, but for now I'm willing to put up with the teleportation. Hopefully it's a temporary feature.

There's a bug where, even on well connected servers, I'll teleport to a nearby location completely at random. This happens maybe 2 or 3 times an hour? It doesn't break the game or anything but it *is* pretty annoying. Has anyone else noticed this?
