i usually just build a 1-2 block high wall, then dig out most of the floor. when the enemies are dead, i might add a few more blocks onto it, so it's 2-3 blocks thick. cool ideas, though. maybe i will try coming up with some other ideas, and make a diagram

Combine the two, digging and building. Get out your spade, dig a hole directly under you that is two blocks thick. Crouch into that. Keep digging until you have a hole that is 3 blocks by 3 blocks, and 2 blocks deep. It will be a square. On all four sides of the square, put a single block on the edge. Once you've done that, put another block on these blocks. Connect the 2 block high stakes with more blocks, and then fill the space above your head with blocks, completing the bunker, by adding a roof above your head. It takes perhaps 20-30 seconds to build if you're fast.

Here's a picture: http://goo.gl/CkNIs

Hope that helps, friends.

Just dig a foxhole if you need defenses. It's almost undetectable and allows for extremely high mobility if you are spotted (just hop out, find another spot and make a 2 block deep hole). As a bonus, it also gives you a much wider firing arc than a normal bunker.

A hole can be used by both sides easy. The bunkers can be modified to the teams needs and to make it harder for enemies.

tl;dr: DIG A HOLE IN THE GROUND AND USE IT. THAT IS ALL YOU NEED. DON'T BUILD RANDOM BUNKERS IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE SO THAT YOUR ENEMIES CAN USE IT.

I am just showing a quick bunker system, and thanks for pointing out the flaws, I have been working on how to fix them and I have a few ideas: Make it wider and add side windows. When you see the fortress You will see how this bunker helps.

Drewgon, both your bunkers have a fatal weakness- by having those blocks that wrap around, you can't move side to side at all, and you can only approach your firing spot in a straight line from behind. So you can't dodge, and ducking won't save you either when the front and sides are just 1 block high. Worse, if you are getting overwhelmed, to retreat means walking straight backwards, so anyone who could see you can still shoot you as you retreat. Finally the side blocks wont provide you with any cover if you get flanked. You'd be better off making it as a wall, like MegaDeuce has.

Here's my EZ-Bake SMG bunker.

Step one: Build a wall four blocks high and two or three blocks thick. Try to do this quickly while the enemy is somewhat distracted.

Step two: Shoot out a window at least two blocks wide. Use said window to shoot the enemy until he dies.

Building off the basic bunker design comes the normal bunker design. This is much easier to make AFTER you have cleared out the near-by enemies. It is intended to create more cover on the way to building a fortress.
WARNING: The bigger the structure the higher the chances of being griefed.
Here is the diagram: http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee443/drewgon13/Normalformbunker.png
If you missed the basic bunker thread:
http://ace-spades.com/forums/topic.php?id=2861

Enjoy. Instructions on how to make the basic fortress will be coming soon.
