My firing sounds come from Snare/Kicks with serious filters and editing layers. Its a terrible way to make a realistic sound but I'm looking more sci-fi so i feel alright with it.

@Gregery: Thanks, I'll check it out.

By the way, is there a good source for audio files? Obviously I don't own all the guns I've made mods for (partially due to sheer quantity and partially due to the fact that the government can be so unkind when it comes to owning an M2 Browning) so I have no way to record a lot of the firing sounds.

I keep my volume down a bit anyways. I don't have much in the way of sound-editing software (any good freeware recommendations, anyone?), which is where this idea came from.

My semi-rifle sound is modified so this would make it a little.. too loud to be any where near a SMG. I think this current sound was intended as a way to keep our ears from bleeding when half the team is derping around full auto.

I've been working on an edit though, one to match my semi.. hasn't gone too incredibly well yet.

After hearing a few mild complaints about the way the SMG sounded, I came up with the world's simplest solution.

Copy the smgshoot.wav file in the .wav folder and paste it back in. Your computer will ask to retitle it to "smgshoot - copy.wav". Let it do that, then delete the original smgshoot.wav file. This is so you can undo the modification later.

Then copy the semishoot.wav file and paste the copy back into the folder. Rename the copy to smgshoot.wav. Now your smg should sound like the rifle on speed.

Simple, yes, but effective.
