Neither of them are survival stories though.

I'd suggest watching Die Welle - it's a great German film inspired by a real-life social experiment.

For books, I usually enjoy reading non-fictional accounts of war, such as Col. Stuart Tootal's "Danger Close" or Andy McNabb's "Bravo Two Zero", but I would highly recommend the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson. Thrilling stuff.

If you're just going at it as a hobby, read what's posted above.

If you're serious though, read Robinson Crusoe- the original castaway story, and Lord of the Flies, which is like Battle Royale, only it's actually believable. Tintin in Tibet and Maus make compelling graphic novel survival stories. As for films, off the top of my head I'd say Apocalypto and The Way Back. Outside that just hook up Wikipedia sometime- often the best tales of survival are the ones that actually happened. Like those of Douglas Mawson, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, Nicholas Alkemade, Vesna Vulović, or Shacketon's Endurance expedition, for example, which was turned into a pretty good 2 part mini series in 2002.

Try reading all three books of Lord of the Rings through...

...oh wait, not what you wanted?

If you want stories about people trying to survive in the outdoors (particularly in the frosty Alaskan climate) I'd recommend Jack London... I was never a huge fan of his stories myself (Eh, I like them enough that I'll read any book of his offered... but I won't go looking for more myself), but he seems a pretty good author. As a bonus, sometimes the guy involved fails to survive, which keeps things from getting bland.

@Kaede

Battle Royal is about a bunch of high school kids put on an island. They are pitted against each other in fights to the death to decide who is freed. It's more cooler than I make it sound, trust me.

Ender's Game takes place in the future where laws are placed on how many children a family can have. Should you have more than three kids, you start paying for education and whatnot for the third child. Because of this, most people call them Thirds, and look down upon them. Ender was born as a third to take part of a program to be drafted into a military battle school, where most battles take place in zero-g. Under the watch of the "teachers", who chose him because they believe he can command a fleet to fight against the Buggers (some insectoid race that decided to Earth for unknown reasons) for the third time, he makes his way up the ranks, eventually commanding an army within the school (there are multiple commanders)---

You know what, just read it. I promise you won't be disappointed. If you are, then feel free to shoot me.

Uhh, Ender's Shadow is a companion novel to Ender's Game. It tells the story of Bean, who grew up as a street rat in Rotterdam. He was picked by recruiters for battle school when he showed signs of high intelligence. He eventually finds his way into Ender's army, and along with him, a boy named Achilles, who seeks his death for seeing him in a helpless state while on the streets.

I could go into this whole thing for hours, seeing as there are more than these two books in the universe of the series.

Btw, Battle Royal's a movie.

As for movies, try Lean On Me (about a teacher who returns to a school to find it uncivilized, and decides to return it to its former state), and The Birds (an old movie that's more funny than suspenseful, about bird that ravage a town and the entire country, eventually trapping a family in their home).

also, maybe look into reading metro 2033, if you have not already. i haven't read it, because i heard the english translation is very poor and i do not read any russian, or enough for me to be sure i'd be able to in another language. the game was pretty cool, and i have heard the book is better

also, the trailer alone is a great movie:
