I also just realized the "Allowed markup" thing over to the right sounds like it's trying to form a sentence.

Possibly translates to:

em = emphasized text. it's the same as italics.

You can use < em > < /em > for italics, but why are codes like <b></b> and <i></i> disabled?

@Stack: Yeah, I figured, but I was wondering why it didn't recognize the normal HTML tags. I can't see how <i>italics</i> would cause someone to get a trojan. Disallowing scripts, marquees, and font size and color changes makes the forums safer and nicer-looking, but the controls are really counterintuitive for me.

Only limited HTML tags are allowed on the forum. BBCode is nothing more than a "layer" over HTML. It supports a predefined set of "tags" and essentially converts them into HTML. This helps keep unwanted tags and possible malicious content under control (such as <script>, <iframe>, and more).

That's the forum software at work then. Not all websites play nice with HTML code in posts.

The only HTML tags I've found to work on the forums are link tags ("a href=URL", "/a"). <i>Italics</i> and <b>bold</b> don't work.

Nope. I give up... the coding for AoS forums comments is screwy.

I've tried using <b></b> and <i></i> on these forums and neither of them worked for me. If they did, I wouldn't have made this thread.

HTML has way more versatility. Plus, I'm more used to coding pages in HTML than block. By the way, <b>bold</b> works in HTML, so aside from the tag markers it's exactly the same.

How is it complicated? It's just simple markups..

I much prefer BBCode's [b]bold[/b] over < strong >strong< /strong > and all the other weird HTML codes. Does anyone else agree with me?
