I have another design that works well for providing opportunities for SMG-users to crouch while firing over the wall, through use of crenellations:
http://filesmelt.com/dl/Wall.png

The advantage here is that riflemen can use the wall through the normal stand-to-shoot, crouch-to-cover method, while the submachine gunners can cover by crouching (crouching reduces SMG recoil, for those of you who don't know) and moving back and forth in and out of cover.

The obvious problem with this wall is that it takes longer to make than other designs. It could be built with a single-thick wall and single-spaced crenellations, but with the destructive capacity of the SMG single-thick walls aren't the greatest cover. Make the wall double-thick (with double-spaced crenellations to avoid reducing visibility) if you expect to use it a lot.

A good wall does a few things

-lets you pop up in surprising places
-shields you from directions you're not looking
-provides cover if you want to run away like a coward-infant

Something like the 1x1x2 hole in the ground can be shot at from any direction and lets the enemy predict exactly where you're gonna show your head.

@KomradeTyler: yeah murder holes are awesome

World's best defensive formation:

http://i.imgur.com/eDpEP.png

Make one, wait for enemies, pop up, kill them all, make another elsewhere. It's completely undetectable, requires no blocks to produce, and you can build it in 3 seconds. It's also very flexible; it can be built on any terrain, and you can easily add stuff like side cover and escape tunnels as needed. It's so effective that nearly every modern military makes use of it (or a variant thereof).

A good wall/position should be if possible, in a higher place, giving a height advantage over the enemy.
Resort to medieval tactics:
Murder holes: Overhangs that overhang the wall with small holes in the ground to shoot any enemies along the wall.

Keeps:A small courtyard that enemies will be channelled into and slaughtered

Ramparts:Sort of like the great wall of China, a block placed every two blocks from each other, offers side protection.

WatchTowers: towers with small bases and a overhangine top with murderholes and such. (easy to grief)

Pits: Pits that the enemy would fall into for farming, possible a deep trench or a trench that it near impossible to get out of. Best effect behind a 1 block or 2 block high wall. Or even infront so enemies can get to you.

It's tall and has more layers than outwrangle's design. Btw outwrangle, I built your design a good 100 times before you posted it on the forums.

yeah like that megadeuce but 1 more parameter of blocks on the roof, so it better protects against grenades, and pvt ryan, thats a good idea to place another block every other square to prevent getting killed but then agian it does restrict A LOT of your view of the other side, so maybe every 2 theres a block?

edit:
Oh and its best if you make the roof the color of the ground so, like deuce said, its harder for the enemy to see it both in game and on map lol

I like the last one :), i have a pretty good ground bunker design as well...but i dont feel like drawing it up, so ill jus ttell you. Its 6x6 and 2 blocks down into the ground, a middle columb will be right in the center for support and it will be 2x2 going up 4 blocks. After that you will make another platform connecting to the top columb square that covers the opening of the 6x6 area. To thus you come out with a completely covered bunker with a 1x1 opening on all sides (including corners) with a support columb in the middle for easy repairs to keep the top from falling. and you have a 2 block wide area to walk around the bunker.
