Voxlap is a free engine to use if you follow the licence. Some other dude made a wolfenstein 3d remake with it.

There are a few other voxel engines out there if you look hard enough. Not all of them make blocky huge maps, some of them are really high res, so it seems like you are really digging in dirt.

I think voxlap is pretty impressive even today.
