I agree, the lack of categories makes wading through the forums a nightmare. Locking the threads of people who can't use the search button is crucial to giving the forums any kind of the official feeling they should have.
TeamLiquid recently had to deal with the massive influx of new SC2 players who were much less... call it respectful of forum rules. They have finally managed to get it under control, and there's a lot of cool posts over there about organizing forums and bringing a large new community under control.
This: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=210370 is a particularly cool example, if Ben/ admins (if he can fix them up) could set up categories and make something like this for each one I think the forums would benefit alot.

Agreed with Chosen. Ignorance would to resolve anything.
More players means more activity, which invariably leads to more repeated/pointless threads being created.
If there was just a bit more organisation with categories and some basic rules enforced, spam would be more controllable.

Ben has admins but dew to a bbPress bug, he is unable to add them.

This is not a good idea. It is VITAL. Lack of any moderation here is terrible. Also, we need completely different forum system - mixing all subforums on index page isn't very good.

You are probably aware that this place is used alot to discuss things. But at the moment it is un-ruled.
Threads are being endlessly bumped and everyone is asking the same questions over and over again. I wouldn't quite say it's spammed, but it's pretty bad.
The forums need more controls, and administrators/moderators to enforce them. We need to lock threads with reason, move threads to another category, and add more categories! One for news, mapping, modding etc.

A collection of people who know the game pretty well and have been reliable. For some, moderating the wiki might be enough, however many of us who have a bit of time on our hands could be available to help moderate these forums.
I just think that, seeing the player base is ever expanding and because people are getting tired of spam, there needs to be some control implemented before this place descends into mayhem.
