"For some of us here I think it is slightly sad that there is very little transparency behind the game development. Ben, although he does a great job, has little community input. Those who have the ideas and expertise to give decent advise are hardly able to give it due to lack of development communication." - TheOperator

Really, I mean really. He releases a new version almost weekly because of the community input. He is pretty open about what features he wants to implement and always provides information on changes he made. The game is only like 6 weeks old. I really dont understand how you can be sad. You think you EA is going to release weekly builds based of community input. What are you comparing AOS too to draw this wild claim that he isnt being transparent?

Ideas are worthless, all of them. The only worthwhile ideas are the ones you can implement yourself. If you truly understand that you will go far in life.

"He is pretty open about what features he wants to implement and always provides information on changes he made."
But that doesn't happen. He usually adds features in an update and we only get to comment on it after it's implemented.

"Ideas are worthless, all of them."
    Why?

"The only worthwhile ideas are the ones you can implement yourself."
I can implement many of the things the community would want to see in Ace of Spades, but sadly I'm not the developer.

@Lexysm: Yeah, that'd be useful, and I think Ben may have mentioned something like it anyway.
@Naka: I agree that most of the suggestions are not good, but ah well.

    @Danhezee:
I am not comparing AoS to anything, for it is a unique game and currently in a very nice early position in development.
Referencing to 'Ideas are worthless, all of them. The only worthwhile ideas are the ones you can implement yourself'.
As bildramer says - Ben is the sole developer and the only (known) person that has access to the source code. I'm glad that I am not in the big chair having to make the decisions about the future of this game and this community that surrounds it, and for that I respect him a great deal.
I think part of the problem lies in the state of this forum.. lack of organisation of posts, of people. Any development news would be flooded by mostly irrelevant comments. The fact he has now assigned a single moderator is a hopeful move, however I think this place is in more desperate need of enforced structure.

I admit I might have been somewhat wrong, :<

Still, I believe the game needs more gameplay-related customization. The friendly fire, for example, could be an option, which would satisfy both sides of the argument.

Still haven't seen a comment on that vsync fiasco, which is amusing.

It doesn't even matter, (most)people. He reads your comments, he clearly knows best (most of the time), and roughly 60% of your comments are, well, you know.
Organization, though, can be greatly improved.

This still doesn't remove the fact that you're not as social as a lot of us would like you to be, Ben ;-) I admit it might not be trivial to reply to every useless mail from the typical "oh hey can you plz add this feature", but I actually took the time to write my properly-formatted mails about pyspades (http://code.google.com/p/pyspades/ ), which I've put a lot of work into by now.

An open protocol (which probably wouldn't take much effort from you) so I wouldn't have to do the more obscure parts of pyspades would be appreciated. Spending weeks on reverse-engineering the protocol can be exhausting, but it seems like I've found some fun in it :-)

I have got a premature server up that works somewhat (in case you think I'm just another guy saying "oh look i opened wireshark and got data im making server now!"). It's still got some issues, so it would help if you told me if I had got something wrong in there.

(I realize the chances of you actually responding to this post are very, very slim, but I thought I would give it a try)

    ;-)

Nice work, Lexsym ;) I wouldn't want to be the one maintaining a tool like that, though (especially since the wave of new updates seems to be coming steadily). I can implement a server-side feature in pyspades that does this, but there's still some way left for pyspades before it becomes useful.

So what happens when people are BEGGING you to help kick a griefer? If people can turn off the chat, our main defense against griefers and hackers is tacken away.

Now, what AoS really needs is something like.. client-side mute and server (global) mute.

This would mean that if someone personally annoys you, you can type in '/mute #ID' and it mutes them for your client only. Then, for admins on the server, if someone really annoys everyone, he can do '/gmute #ID' and it'll mute him for everyone.

Also, I find it slightly annoying having to open up the chat and prefix a command with '/'. Could there not be a separate "command line" that automatically prefixes the message with '/'?
E.g. instead of pressing 't', you press '/' to open the command line, which automatically prefixes the message with a '/'. If, upon sending, it is indeed a valid command, then it will do that command. If it is not a valid command, then it simply says the message in normal chat.
e.g. if you pressed '/' and typed 'votekick 3', then it would send that command on. But if someone typed in 'fish', then it will realise that '/fish' is not a valid command, and so just sends 'fish' as general chat.
Maybe have a client-sided list so that the client can quickly check the command?..

Like a Console. Like using the Tilda key in any source game (as long as developers console is open). Also, I like prefixing everything with "!" instead of "/"

hmm.. I think ! is more for scripted commands (which I hope will come at some point!). Client/server commands should be '/' in my opinion.

yes but they should show up in a console log (or in chat as greyed out text or something). Because when I type them, I feel like I'm just being trolled. So I always use my scripted "!" commands. WHICH BTW, WILL BE PUBLIC VERY SOON!

No I want a chat display (or console log, i.e. tilda screen), to output "invalid command" or "votekicking player 25" or w/e. What I mean by script commands, is that the first public release of ServerBot is very soon. Probably could've already happened if it wasn't for Naka's IP Changing and it being the the "invalid ip range"

I've not heard of a tilda screen..
Ah I see. I look forward to seeing the scripted bot in action!
I completely agree that there needs to be global communication offered for that kind of thing.

Another thought to make things a little clearer... give the FIC (friendly intel carrier) lets say, a gold circle rather than an ordinary white one. I'd like to know where our FIC is in order to guard him properly, because in normal servers there's very little useful communication about such things.

It's also nice to see pyspades being developed by mat^2. He gives us very frequent updates in the IRC channel (http://www.aceofspadeswiki.com/index.php?title=IRC). I'm pretty enthusiastic about the features he can add through it. :)

Chat history would be nice. Being able to set the colours of each chat too. And heck, why not a console, like Lexsym said.
