Does this address work for you? http://automation.whatismyip.com/n09230945.asp If not, that's why (Ace of Spades uses it to identify your external IP for some very, very silly reason). |

I think a more appropriate solution to retrieving the external IP address would be hosting a small PHP script on the main server that returns the IP. That way the only reason it would fail would be because of a server issue, which would also mean the server listing would be unavailable as well. It seems appropriate that those two things be tied together in a sense. Maybe he prefers using a third-party so it's just less traffic for his server. |

StackOverflow, for clients, it should be absolutely unnecessary to retrieve the IP since you're already sending datagrams to the server, and from these, you can get the relevant IP address. For some reason, the client tells the server what it's external IP is, which is weird. When connecting to the master server, the server retrieves the IP from whatismyip.com and tells the master server what its IP is. This is also unnecessary, and it allows you to add servers for IPs you don't "own". In both cases, I can't find a good reason for retrieving the external IP from whatismyip.com. |

Whoops, should've been more clear. While Purfectko's post was regarding the client, I was talking about a more general approach for both client and server (I'm assuming it uses whatsmyip.com for both). My guess is the IP is sent to the master server and then "parsed" into the AOS URL format. For both client and server this seems kind of unnecessary like you said. If there was a need to retrieve the IP before sending the request to the master server (which I don't see when this would really be necessary), it'd be better practice to use a script that he controls rather than a third-part. As we've seen, a simple change of whatsmyip.com's automation URL breaks the entire thing, which wouldn't happen if Ben had control of the page/script that is being requested. |

Ace of spades was working fine last night and now this, anyone know of a workaround? I see that whatsmyip. servers are down I guess I just have to wait for them to be brought back online. |

#22816 Snake Member Posted 13 years ago |
well people are still playing so is there a way to swap sites where we get the ip from? |
#22825 namewithnospace Member Posted 13 years ago |
I use http://automation.whatismyip.com/n09230945.asp to get your IP address. It's a workaround for a bug in the networking code that I'm pretty sure is fixed but haven't had a chance to really test out. If that website isn't working for you, try posting on their forum http://forum.whatismyip.com/ and include your location until I can roll out a fix. |

Bcoolface: It seems to work for USA people, But not Australians. Can you create a hotfix with some alternative ip returners for when it doesn't work? |
#22828 HeyJD Member Posted 13 years ago |
I'm also getting an error for both links. |
#22830 harbl Member Posted 13 years ago |
