  • Beta testing will most likely be halted
  • 12

Hi guys, beta testing may be put on hold in a bit. I'm rewriting a lot of the netcode server-side and testing that may take a while. And I think at this point the griefers are putting more and more people off the game.

Thanks for trying out the game and I hope to make a stronger release in the future.

    Later!

maybe you should try some semi-open-source attempts.

send a request for some methodes with parameter + interfaces etc and what it should do
then some people could write pseudo or real cpp code and you can choose to implement the code or not

a new forum section could be enough to fulfill this purpose

at this point open sourcing it would prob cause more hacking, only this time it would be attacks on the servers which would obviously be far more damaging to hosts and players alike.

I believe from what i have read that this is part of the move to get more code executing server side to remove client hacking exploits.

So - and this is just my opinion based on very sparce information - this is the beginging of a long process of addressing hacking and lag issues, so cookies all round if im right.

Angus: from what I've seen, since 0.35 hackers and griefers are no longer an issue due to votekicking also banning people.

I for one support this decision.

Sad to see it's down for a bit, becase over the past few days hackers/griefers were dealt with in game, but I agree that something needs to be done rather than just leaving it to the players.

Don't keep us waiting too long though !

Making it open source wouldn't necessarily open new areas for exploitation, in fact, with so many prying eyes, more exploits can be found and potentially fixed. Obviously the security of open source is another subject, but it's a good idea to keep in mind but of course it's up to the developer. Most of the "hackers" wouldn't be able to make anything from seeing source code anyway, seeing as most of them are skiddies who know how to run a program somebody else made and/or Cheat Engine.

I'd be willing to pay physical money for this game, which like someone else said might help alleviate some of the hackers/greifers. It's a game based off of two very popular gaming concepts, but it a tiny, simplistic package with it's own sense off originality.

Just don't forget bcoolface, you've got a community plentiful of developers who would love to help contribute to this.

    How disappointing D:>

Was really enjoying playing on the new server that had custom admin tools.

Well, good luck on the development and I'll be checking back constantly!

Giving the source code to trusted and honourable members doesn't sound too far fetched, actually.

Do you have an estimate on when you think you'll be done? And do you necessarily have to close all Beta Testing for server-side tests?

lexsym was working on an admin tool that, frankly, addressed the hacking/griefing issues pretty damn well. At the time I got off the server, he could instantly kick, kill or (indirectly) track a player, had a rudimentary automatic hack-detection, and could assign privileges to other users. Hackers were promptly kicked (a good portion with the auto-detection, the rest by admins), and suspected griefers could be killed until the situation could be sorted out. I'd look into it; it is (was?) a great temporary solution.

Halting the game is a terrible idea imo.

Things were okay, and "hackers" were only a minor inconvenience as they'd get kicked off.

Please can we have the server list back up? My friends are I were just getting into the game - I think you'll lose popularity by shutting it down!

This was pretty stupid though, not being able to play the game at all is worse than being able to play the game with a few douche-bags.

Guys, join the Facepunch server, we need more people.

    Here is the link: aos://1002554968

Copy that link and post it in your browser, it is a direct link to the FP EU sever. It's usually hacker free.

I totally agree. I was looking forward to playing the game today, only to find it down. :< There's really no reason to take it down because of a few douche bags. Most of the servers that get hosted are usually full, so I'm not really sure why you think people are put off by a few griefers. I mean, that's what we have /votekick for. :D

It would be nice if we had a team of freelancers working on an anti-cheat mod so apeape's satanic trainer of (.....) will not be allowed anymore whil Uncle Ben is working on Game features.

Perhaps you could keep it up, then do the testing on your computer using something like Xampp? Because you're going to lose quite a bit of popularity if you have more then a week or two of downtime.

Sad that it has come to this but necessary.

I am going to make another donation right now.

I don't think he is going to lose one bit of popularity - maybe gain some from the fact that he is willing to pull the game before hackers totally destroy it.
