Hate to say it but if you've been friends for what I'm guessing is several years, that's probably all she'll ever want to be with you. Better to keep her as a friend and chase girls in Maine than risk blurting out something you'll regret to her before you go, and losing contact with her completely out of sheer awkwardness.

Well I would suggest forgetting about her. I also had girl problems, they just love to play around with guys and go for the assholes then cry about it. I then realized that this feeling of "love" is most often false. I am not saying love doesn't exist, but it is scarcer than you think.

First off, the chemicals that the brain produces to simulate romantic attraction and sexual attraction can cause the production of each other. This happens because the human brain is set to protect mates, off springs, and family. So, because you are built to have a protective mind set about mates, your brain takes the sexual attractment chemicals and uses that to make the romantic "love feelings" about people who you are not yet involved with.

Also, for a long time women were mostly oppressed in the world. Then feminism came along and taught them that they don't NEED a man in their life. They then became equal in the minds of people and then went from the oppressed weak "stay at home" girls to strong independent women. Mostly because of this new social and mental freedom to be who they want to be, even without a male in their lives.

Now here comes the problem for men. Because of this independence mentioned above, in recent years, have quickly turned the tables on us. They have become picky and believe now that men can be their play things. I am not hating on feminism, but we need to make a stand too. Far too often are women a possible weakness to us, causing us to make bad choices and make a fool of ourselves courting a picky mate while they still look for bigger prey.

To sum this up, you don't NEED this girl. Don't let her hold you back. Make choices, take risks, don't fall victim to a feeling we all can control if we try. Be a man, and leave the girl. For if not, you could be held back by a cruel folly of the heart.
