Make a game mode out of it.

Team one- has blocks and guns and an important or iconic structure that has to be protected. (The Iconic structure can not be repaired or greifed by their own team)

Team two- has their guns, spades and pickaxes. They get a foot-speed bonus too to make them harder to hit.

One team tries to build battlements to protect their giant penis structure.... I mean statue or some sort and frantically defend them from olympic runners with picks. While the others sprint up and grief everything they see while laughing until they cant see the screen.

Wouldn't team two just SMG the statue from a distance? Even the rifles would suffice with a bit of coordination.

Explain to me how this is the "solution to griefing".

There is no solution to griefing. It's been happening for years and years, since the beginning of multiplayer games.

It's possible to divert the act of griefing into accepted gameplay, which essentially cancels what it means to "grief". Combine this with user registration, and we'll likely satisfy or compromise with those who simply love destruction. (However, don't expect this prediction to be 100% true. There will always be that one Deuce everybody hates.)

Griefers will find a way to grief in a griefing game mode.
You know how? By not griefing, then the other team rages like OH EMGEE WHY YOU NO DESTROY MAH DIKC?

Reminds me of that part in the Korean campaign of AoE II Conquerors where you had to protect a Wonder Monument and making your way through a forest to get a special boat... SO MUCH NOSTALGIA.
