I think you should be able to mine blocks to get more blocks, and mine the ground and be able to destroy the ground to collect more block from that.

you can, but i think that you have to do this with the pickaxe, and the maximum might be 50, i dont know

I've tried to mine the ground directly below me many time on many servers but they don't seem to break like constructions i make my self. You should also be able to carry more block at the same time imo :)

some maps do not have undergrounds, i think it's because there's a limit on how high the ceiling can be, so when maps want to have huge skyscrapers, they usually leave only 1 or 2 blocks for the floor, or just dont allow destroying it at all

probably something the developer will fix in later update i hope. would be cool to be able to make underground bases and make huge tunnel complexes :P

I don't think Ben would ever implement grenades.. :( They just don't fit the style of this game. But yeah, it would be cool.

I think what we really need is some way to ascend a hill, and not have to make tunnels through everything.....like a jump function or something.

Actually the pickaxe thing isn't as uncommon as one might think. Someone who plays on the more recent populated maps (pinpoint, potentially hallway, island) starts at the ground floor.
