I know this is going to be an unpopular concept and personally I don't really give a shit about language filters. But seeing how this is a (so far) free game and it seems to have attracted a large, ahem... how shall I put, community of younger people; it seems to me one option that should be on the table is a language filter for the chats... probably for the server listing too. Although I personally think a server named Anal Thunder is actually quite funny, the reality is that a lot of parents probably will see that and not let Little Skippy Jr. install this wicked cool game. I mean, like, I drop an f-bomb or two from time to time but when you have some 9 year old just slaughtering the english language and making homophobic and racist statements it just gets on my nerves after a while. You could just have it replace certain offensive terms with humorous substitutes or ***** or what-have-you. Comments? |

If it's an optional filter, sure, but as cartoony as the game looks, it's a game about war. If you're mature enough to play a game about war, you're mature enough to know the words "fuck" and "shit". |

"the reality is that a lot of parents probably will see that and not let Little Skippy Jr. install this wicked cool game." nah |

+1 to swear filter. Swearing as a whole is okay but the context people are pitting it in is not right. |
#5612 Jackster Member Posted 13 years ago |
Yeah, I agree. An optional swear filter should be put in place. |
#5617 Shadows Member Posted 13 years ago |
@Jackster "Swearing as a hole" What... Swearing cant be a hole you silly goose. Anyway, + 1 if it is optional. |
#5622 MadMonkey119 Member Posted 13 years ago |
MadMonkey119, "as a whole" is a phrase in the UK. |
#5625 Jackster Member Posted 13 years ago |
as a whole |
#5628 Lokiamis Member Posted 13 years ago |
Dam it. Thought I missed something xD Bed time and no more beer for me :) |
#5632 Jackster Member Posted 13 years ago |
And we can get a typo filter for Jackster too while we are at it. ;-) Mostly it's the racist/homophobic slurs that bug me. I just don't see any point for them in a game. It's just such a /b/tard thing to say. |

If its optional, I dont see why not. |
#5648 Arius Member Posted 13 years ago |
Buffet_of_Lies +1 :P Or buy me a new keyboard? |

No need to be so sensitive, everyone. |
#5674 Spaceman Member Posted 13 years ago |
More or less completely against censorship. If someone is being abusive, just kick/ban them. |
#5808 Qizi Member Posted 13 years ago |
I hate it when people have offensive names, or they just say pointless out of context offensive slurs and phrases. We've all seen the guys who will just drop the n-word for no reason. Also, I've seen a lot of guys use the term 'autistic'. That, to me, is extremely offensive. My cousin is autistic, and mentally handicapped people are the last thing people should make fun of. +1 from me |

Seeing as there is a complete lack of user interface at this time, I would prefer an obviously placed warning (on game opening?) citing that there is no regulation of profanity, and that players are subject to whatever the others see fit, verbally. In addition, forced chat filtering just makes everyone end up talking like Father Ted. |
#5845 Brojangles Member Posted 13 years ago |
Brojangles LoL no need for any warning. :P "profanity" This is a war game. Not a Xrated sex tap. |
#5870 Jackster Member Posted 13 years ago |
This is one reason a lot of online games have the disclaimer "game experience may change with online play", the language. You play with other people, you talk to other people, just like there's no censorship in face to face communication, there shouldn't be in a game involving two or more people. That's just my opinion though. |

How about an option that eliminates chat completely because I don't give a fuck |
#5875 Lokiamis Member Posted 13 years ago |
Take a look at minecraft. Just think of one part of the human body. You can make it but MineCraft still does not put warnings up because it does not have to. Only games that are meant to xxx in them need it. |
#5878 Jackster Member Posted 13 years ago |
Don't really care about language filter. People will just make substitute words, and it'll just be stupid in general. Normally I don't care for chat, but its usefulness is shown in organising team operation. |
#5889 OVERLORD Member Posted 13 years ago |
Just realized: A language filter won't stop people from writing slurs on the map, so it's a useless battle. And again, it's a game about war: If bad words aren't good for you, neither is war. |
#5916 ZakDCCLXXVII Member Posted 13 years ago |
Kids use more bad language than "mature people". An people called Dick would feel bad for his name being filtered. |
#5917 Polshy Member Posted 13 years ago |
Good point, Zak. So many interesting viewpoints. I figured I'd just bring the subject up. I'm pretty much decided on the fact that I just don't really give a damn one way or the other really. |
#5932 Buffet_of_Lies Cartographer Posted 13 years ago |
There's no problem in bringing the subject up, again: I support the idea if it's optional, it's just that no matter what, people will circumvent it. Hell, if the person could set up the filter themselves (custom filter, remove words and any variants YOU can think of, either for yourself or your server), that'd be pretty neat, but that's something I'd save for after 1.0 in terms of importance. Just my opinion, though, I mean, I'm the one screaming for an SMG and other frivolous things. :v XD |
