  • The Mighty Jeep.

    Whenever Ben does get around to developing vehicles, as he mentioned he might, I hope that he starts simple. With a Jeep.

    Simple blocky shape. Wheels that don't even need to animate (maybe only the front ones that turn left and right). Can carry some amount of soldiers, perhaps between 3 and 6. Press E to enter, press the F1-6 keys to switch positions, press E to exit. Decently fast, but nothing ridiculous. Perhaps a mounted weapon of some sort, but that can come later once the driving mechanics are nailed.

    Can travel up only one block difference (or more, will have to be tweaked, but at least be able to escape the water). This will create a strategic situation, where if a team wants to utilize their jeep fully on a hilly or uneven terrain map, they will have to build infrastructure to support it (Bridges, wide tunnels, carving out hillsides into flat sections, etc). It all ties in to the theme of construction that is so unique to this game.

    Spawn is simple. In the same way the intel and tent spawn, a small permanent pad will appear that the jeep spawns on whenever destroyed.

    Infantry ability to counter it should be simple at first. A certain number of shots to any part of the vehicle will cause it to slow. More shots will disable it (cause it to stop). And even more shots will cause it to explode. This feature would give players a fighting chance against the jeep, and not allow it to dominate gameplay. Also, it will give players another reason to use the SMG, as how the weapons are currently set up in AOS, it would be the most effective for countering the jeep.

    I am totally for eventually adding in more vehicles (tanks, boats, helicopters, planes, hot air ballons, etc) and some sort of rocket weapon to counter them all.

    But for the first vehicles, simple is best.

    Simplicity is one of the most beautiful aspects of this game and one that makes it so much fun to play. Give players simple mechanics that work well, and they will figure out how best to use them.

    I hope Ben reads this post and takes these ideas into consideration. We love this game, and love watching it grow. Thanks!

    yeah, I think starting off with this would be good. i agree with most of what you've said. i remember thinking about how maybe the roads could be two blocks long, sort of like autoclimb, but make it so it can only travel up areas like that, but i'm not sure if that'd really work. maybe i will make a diagram to show what i mean

    I did a quick diagram, i think 2 blocks would not really work, so maybe 3:

    i don't know, maybe 4 or 5 would be good

    Limit the capacity too 4, cause 6 at times is essentially the entire team (thats being usefull atleast) and allow the windhield to be broken and shot through.

    Otherwise its great

    /\ btw I like the pic

    Yeah, smaller capacity would be better and help keep it a tactical asset.

    No windshield. Too complex. This is war son!

    It should be possible (but very hard) to snipe the rider or driver and kill him he will fall of the jeep and lay on the floor the driver has more coverage then the passengers,why?Because if you kill the driver the jeep will stop and in 10-5 seconds a new driver will be selected automatically if no one gets off and gets in the driver seat....so yah :) also if you fall from a far height it will get damaged a little alot or may explode automatically...oh and a one hoe ditch won't stop the jeep maby a 2 hole ditch but not a 1 hole...

    Also a car exsplosion is bigger badder and more lethal than a grenade so if you through agrenade at a jeep it will be worth it

    I'm gonna make a poll seeing what vehicles people would want.

    Really doubt vehicles are gonna make it into AoS tho...

    I would really like that it could carry most of the team actually, so the whole team isn't arguing

    @Tyler

    I know, but a man can dream goddammit!

    @tonyantonio

    Think of the jeep as more of a convertible. With all driver and passenger upper torsos and heads exposed, free to be shot at as if they were on the ground. Likewise, those riding in the jeep minus the driver will be able to shoot normally, it will just be harder to hit things due to the driver swerving all over the road. When someone is killed while riding in the jeep, their body just falls to the ground like it normally would. Nothing fancy.

    No auto seat switching, that's just silly. If the driver gets shot out, it's up to a passenger to switch position (using the F1 key) and take over driving.

    Yes, some sort of fall damage would have to be calculated. Perhaps based on the way player fall damage works.

    This is all just my daydreaming here. I realize that we are a long way from having vehicles (if ever) in AOS. But hell, it's fun to speculate and come up with concepts that might or might not work. So that when Mr. Aksoy does find the time, he's already got some nice ideas already laid out.

    Jeep should be added first, but i have to admit i don't like the idea of being able to shoot the driver. The ppl on the jeep should be killable, but not the driver. I don't know why, but it just sounds retardet. Also, destroying the vehicle should kill everyone on it, pretty obvius feature but should be added

    this is a very good idea that i have thiought about since ben first said he might add vehicles, i agree with everything in the OP, but would like the ability to kill the players who are driving and riding the jeep too, so that if you didnt have grenades to hand or were using a sniper you could trap the jeep in your half, rendering it useless to the enemy :)

    look, if you're going to have an infrastructure for a jeep then you've got to make land blocks stronger. As it is now, a griefer could easily dig out or blow up a road in about 5 seconds and then jeeps would be useless.

    The Jeep wasn't used in World War 1, when Ace of Spades is supposed to be set, and neither were the RAF. They were known as the RFC.
    But I DO like the idea of a vehicle we can drive about! :D

    Just looked it up. The Jeep I THINK you are talking about, The "Willys MB US Army Jeep" was first produced in 1941. So I think you are thinking of the wrong period.

    Hmmm... The thing I don't get is That if new servers are created will the Jeep or car or... WHATEVER be spawned out of thin air? Or will you be able to Place it on the map?
    FURTHER QUESTIONS

    Nope. They weren't used in WW1. And anyway this game is not based on WW1 since MP5.
