  • Poly2vox textures?
  •

Has anyone ever gotten a model imported with poly2vox with a texture?

I am trying the importer for a new castle building script I am working on.

If i could even get the most basic colors would be lovely. I get them to port over with the texture.... but no UV mapping.

    Thanks for any help :)

I am using the 3ds exporter BTW, so if there are beter formats to use please let me know :)

    EDIT: CRAP! wrong section.

Indeed, I have successfully converted models with textures via poly2vox, JoJoe. That is if, by textures, you mean the blocks are colored according to what the textures would be. It seems pretty hit or miss. If I recall it seemed to be 3DS models that worked best, and I am pretty certain the textures have to be the same name as the model. Also, something you might not know is that poly2vox will read ZIPped up files as well and I think I found that that worked more reliably than unzipping everything into the poly2vox folder. Sorry I can't be more specific... it's been a few weeks since I did any map editing because I had to move to a new apartment which has left me so braindead the past two weeks I've barely been able to play much less work on maps... but I am slowly returning to the fold.

Oh and Joe, you should contact me via my email which is [email protected] (remove the SWEATYSPAM part)

I really like your maps, as I've said before but what is more is that in a relatively short period of time you've become a pillar of the AoS community. I doff my hat to you, sir. Anyway I can help, let me know. (And BTW... love your DEVO energy dome avatar...)

EDIT:Oh... derp, I see... you're wondering about UV mapping... hmmm. I'm going to hazard a guess that it doesn't support that. I'm sure you've read the limited description of what pol2vox's capabilities are on Ken Silverman's page: "POLY2VOX recognizes the following texture formats: PNG,JPG,GIF,TGA,CEL,BMP,PCX."
You may just want to email Ken and ask him... his email address is at the bottom of his page: http://advsys.net/ken

My god you are brilliant Buffet_of_Lies!

How could I have been so stupid, MD3 files are read by most game engines in .PK3 files, which are just renamed zip files :).

You would have thought I would have done that automatically! I have made maps for : Quake 2, Quake 3, Urban terror, True combat, Soldier of fortune 2, and Return to castle wolfenstein. (lots of other off-topic game engines too!!)

going to test that out now :) i have a terrain shader all made up in blender. If i can port over terrains with color mapped to them, I can poop out 4-5 maps a day lol!

BTW UV mapping is what all models use for textures to be mapped on the right poly, and with the right projection. If the models you ported over have any color at all in the right places means it was correctly UV mapped and ported over.

ok, time to go and try this out!! thanks again!!

BTW if you want to ADMIN any of my servers, let me know. :D

    OMG! it works PERFECTLY!!

The UV cords are coming over very nice.

    Looks like the limitations are:
UV seams get colors added to themselves making it brighter.
64 color pallet (out of 256 possible colors)

Convex shapes are the best, concave is possible but it seems to shave off corners.

It really does not like sharp/creased/solid edges. you need to remove all teh smoothing settings or it gets really wonkie. I have a feeling this is his hack for poorly made poly models that rely on shading hacks. It will make a more rounded edge rather than a sharp one.

    STICKIE THIS PLEASE!!

lol, this should really change the looks of my stuff , I can bake shadows on my meshes now in blender, so everything will be shaded like the terrain! 8)

Can't wait to see the results, Joe. I'm glad that I was able to help, even if I misunderstood your original posting. LOL. I bow to your mapmaking abilities.
