I made some tools to convert bitmaps to .vxl maps. Currently, you can make flat maps or use a heightmap.

Binaries for 32-bit Windows:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17109687/bct.zip

The tools save to a file named "map.vxl" by default; if you have UAC enabled, you might need to run a batch file as administrator.

I could easily add a tool to convert 3D raw data, but the input files need to be a whopping 64 MB.

Post bugs/comments, please.

Hey everyone,

I have some questions:
How do you make the heightmap for a map?
I want to know as many ways as possible, to pick the easiest out, because i'm new at mapping for AoS, i've mapped for other games such as CS1.6 and Urban terror before. and really want to learn it for this game now too.

I use gimp,
The ways i already know:
- Get the origional picture, make a new layer, use opacity, draw the black and white over the right places, blur it.
- greyscale the origional image.

Send your methods here please.

This is some random map I made with GIMP and bildramer's bitmap converter

The map has 2 large landmasses for each team along with a central landmass and small strips of land separating them.

Here is the heightmap and map view:
