  • 3 small issues with autoclimb
  •

!. I noticed while autoclimbing you lose NO zpeed from walking, this is an issue as it makes terrains effects almost redundant and takes away from the gameplay experience. I would suggest making you move at half regular walking speed while climbing (to simulate how long it took to jump up each block) autoclimb is for convenience of not mashing the spacebar, not to make climbing faster.

    2. Autoclimb should be toggable, like you need to be holding the spacebar for it to activate, this way if you want you can edge along single blocks, instead of always going up the blocks on accident.

    3. Whenever you jump the autoclimb makes you climb up 2 blocks width instead of just one. As in, before you could jump to the height of one block to get on top, but with autoclimb you can get on top of a blocks 2 stacks high as the autoclimb doesn't recognize the fifference between walking next to a block or being in mid-air, this feature is a bit buggy and makes it a bit "too" easy to climb objects, plus it can make you fall off of platforms by accident

I hope Bcoolface sees this and takes into account everything I posted, because right now autoclimb is more annoying then helpful...

so does crouch jumping make you just 3 blocks?

    I agree with everything.

Number 3 is a feature however. You can now jump higher so you don't have to crouchjump when you get out of river.

Best solution for me would be, as always, old system.

maybe developers should do something about those hack packs instead of messing with mechanics nobody complains about

I think the autoclimb (which I don't like, for the record... although my space bar has a different opinion) shouldn't work when you are walking backwards. Just a thought.

Speed and smoothness should definitely be fixed. It's near impossible to shoot a target Autoclimbing and before you know it he's already past your frontlines.

Yeah. It just seems like people are zipping around the maps now. It's absurd. And the smoothness factor... totally. Here's a very short video which I think demonstrates the jitter fairly well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghHX3RqFBWQ

This. The game seems too fast with autoclimb; you can run for cover a lot quicker when you're out in the open, and you can reach the enemy spawn a lot faster from your own.

A lot of what I like about AoS is the tactic of building forward trenches and bunkers to support an advance. It's a lot of fun to see an island fort or a bridge change hands between blue and green over the course of a game, and really fits the whole "WWI-but-not-quite-as-static" vibe. I'm afraid the added player speed will lead to more straightforward spawn-to-spawn mass rushes between one massive fort and another. I guess that would make more of a "WWI-but-less-fun" vibe.

I think auto climb is helping the game. Before you'd end up with basically two teams of snipers because people didn't want to spend ages climbing hill then getting killed, climbing hills then getting killed, climbing hills then getting killed constantly so they'd just dig-in and you'd either get a dull game with everyone camping or one team camping and the other team over-running/sitting at their enemy's frontier trying to pick off the snipers.

Now the game is fluid and there are big battles over the front-line with forts growing and disappearing within minutes, changing hands rapidly. Its awesome to run across the hills with your team around you to assault a hard-point on a hill that the opposite has created and take it quickly, maybe only to lose it again moment later. Its awesome. You never got this when everyone was hiding and sniping.

Its totally transformed the game for the better. Sure the 'l33t sniperz' are upset because suddenly their turkey shoot is over but I think its great.

It's better this way now that there are win conditions. More focus on land battles rather than tunneling for a guaranteed cap.

it all needs to be smoothed out still

and I would still like it if you had to hold space bar to autoclimb

I think the problem with autoclimb is that anyone can do it at any time. It's true that the action is now more fast-paced, but that's not the kind of game Ace of Spades is supposed to be. Perhaps if the creator allows for smaller maps with indestructible blocks, this would be an excellent feature for making stairs and the like, but in the larger map scenario, it simply makes everyone play non-tactical shooting matches at the top of the mountains. Nobody even digs trenches any more.

There are two possible solutions: make it so that autoclimb works for a short time with a cool-down (like, or in addition to a sprint key).

Or Ben could make it so that autoclimb and any future dramatic features like it can be toggled on or off by the server, allowing for a more custom experience. Perhaps this could also be done with the "anti-griefing measures" that have been implemented in the last update (which I find make it too easy to just team kill, then grief).

Excellent ideas! Autoclimb = sprint with cooldown...I like this a lot.

Atm, autoclimb just feels like moving around standing on a hovering snowboard. The good old WWII feeling is gone. Where you had to do something to climb up that huge mountain. Where you were proud of yourself when you stood on the top and made it to that great sniping position. Where you cursed rudely when you fell down/got killed on that bridge up high where you needed 5min to climb up to.
With all those people now running around everywhere not caring about cover anymore it feels strange. I mean, it was war before. Block war, but I never cared about the blocky look - this game really had (ok, still has) a lot of atmosphere in it. Simplifying already built-in features/movements and adding new ones can often lead to more variety but will also move the game away from it's core gamers who liked and loved the game in the raw state it was in the beginning.

Ah god, one sentimental post I made...

It just needs to be smoothed and slowed.
