  • A proposal to add gameplay depth:
  •

Ace of Spades has historically been a pretty shallow game, and while we've seen updates to improve the presentation of the game and iron out technical wrinkles, we haven't really seen anything to make the game itself play better.

The way I envision it, AoS is basically about territory control. I want to preserve the basic gameplay as much as possible while adding some function so there's more strategy beyond choosing "Sneak the Intel", "Kill lots of Dudes on the other side of the map", or "Defend my own Intel". I noticed the follow system used by PySpades actually could do this, but was far too abusable in most cases.

I propose therefore, a new weapon which would replace the blocks in the inventory: The Supply Block. You can only carry one Supply Block, and wherever it's placed your team can choose to respawn ontop of it (Through a respawn screen such as those in the battlefield series, where you could respawn at your command post or any supply block) Supply blocks are shown on the map with a team colored X for both teams, and you cannot place supply blocks within a certain radius of enemy spawn blocks. Supply blocks covered on all sides become normal blocks in the same way that normal blocks lose their color, and lastly, supply blocks die in a single rifle shot, so you need to protect them.

The idea is to allow you to control territory and make front lines more "real", in addition to removing alot of the randomness from respawning anywhere on your own side.

    Thoughts?

That's actually a good idea you have there, like what the assault/medic class has on BC2.

Enemy team should be able to take over your supply block too.

I don't wish to quote Ben on this, but he mentioned earlier this month in #AoS about the development of a territorial control-style gamemode in the making..
As far as I can tell, this next update is gonna be big o.O

In place of the blocks themselves? Hell no.

I'm sure more game modes will be added eventually.

That actually does sound like a good idea, it would help to prolong some of the battles. The only thing that I really have problem with is the fact that the block would be destroyable in 1 shot, that's a bit too weak. Make it around 5-10 rounds, that would be a bit more balanced.

I also agree with Gregery; nice name lol. It reminds me of good old Final Fantasy IX.

A terroritorial-control gamemode would be awesome.

Of course, TGM mentioned that Ben may already have one in the works. Awesome work, Ben!

I think I may of mis-represented my idea.

I don't think that the supply block would replace ALL BLOCKS FOREVER in your inventory, but that you'd have to choose between normal blocks and the supply block.

As TheGrandmaster has already said, territory control is probably in the next update.
That said, I really like this idea!
I should really wait to see how/if Ben has implemented territory control but if it is with static captureable command posts, while pretty darn cool, I would prefer this idea in the long run.
Keeping the control in the players hands is a good thing.
I think it could work and I'd love to test this.
