  • a way to stop griefers?
  •

so i have an idea if there are 3 or more blocks going up and are your team's color you cannot destroy them and cannot take out the the bottom - nades since they might take out one or a second idea it would take 20 swings with a pickaxe to stop greifers but also make it wheare you can build
also the opposite team can destroy it normally

Or a registration system. Why try to stop them when you could get rid of them.

@Greg: I'm not sure that'll work. Griefers can just make a new account for their griefing.

    @Joseph

That's why the accounts would have to be e-mail activated. Not many greifers would care to make a new e-mail along with each new account they create just so they can get banned again :p

Kanye, it seems like you've never heard about websites like yopmail.com

It's really annoying that all those who are for an account system always use the same invalid arguments...

Either way, it will cut down greifing. So that doesn't really matter too much.

But is cutting down griefing a little worth Ben's time to code all of this, and his money to be spent on a server to keep track of the accounts?
    (Hint: no)

I suppose not, but I don't see why it wouldn't be something that he would implement when the game is out of it's beta stages (and has a bit more popularity). Only seems logical.

Let's discuss that again when the game is complete, but for now, there is NO reason to add accounts.
(I honestly hope that we'll never have them, since the userbase will only get worse)

Either e-mail activation, or all servers have active (and alert) admins. IDK. :/

Everybody has their own opinions, Devas. But I understand where you're coming from, and partially agree, but I'll leave it at that as to avoid any more unnecessary debate :p

Hopefully this new votekick system will be good enough for now! I'm excited to try it out.

Wow Devas, why so butthurt about registration?

I think it would be great. It's possible to get new emails quickly, yes, but since such email sign-up systems usually have an associated delay, it would take several minutes for a griefer to get a new account. Add in the small amount of time taken to make a new email account, and an IP ban which requires using a proxy or restarting your modem, and a griefer could be looking at ten to fifteen minutes between in-game griefing sessions.

It might also help to add a fee to play AoS. I know a lot of you are resistant to the idea, but suppose we make it a token amount. Even $0.25 US would be enough. Kids would have to get their parents to buy the game for them, while the low cost wouldn't deter anyone who actually wanted to play. Additionally, if your acount gets banned, you have to pay another 25 cents to get back on... the numbers will add up, and before long people won't be able to afford to grief. This does mean that we'll have to be careful about who can permanently ban people from the master server, but ultimately I think it'll help cut back on griefers a lot. Twelve-year-olds will have a hard time explaining to their parents why they need to buy the same game 27 times in one day, and they'll be forced to stop.

Joseph Allen is right too, though. Constant admin presence also protects a server quite well, and it's beyond me why people don't monitor their servers better.

IP blocking/banning. Let's say the third kick would be a permanent ban (after two one-week bans).

@1337: The fund might help cut off a lot of griefers, but what about people like me? I liked this game 'cuz it was free. (Griefers aren't much of a problem to me, since I'm mostly ventillating heads with my Lasgun.)

I agreed with the pay-to-play part in the past and I still do, since it'd really stop a great part of griefing; but that'd also stop new players from coming or old ones from still playing.

    Solution:
Votekicking UI. A visible box that springs up and people vote by pressing F12 for 'yes' and F11 for 'no'. Simple, quick and easy.
I've heard the votekicking in the next update is more of a '/y' system, which is a step in the right direction - but the above would be best.

Registration makes things too fiddly and would not stop griefers unless P2P, in which case alot of people would not play, which negates from the advantage.

That system is already in a game called "Soldat" and works extremely well against all kinds of abusers, maybe even too well, seen the frequent votekicks "just for fun" in some servers.

@Joseph Allen: The idea behind charging a small amount is that to anybody with enough money to pay for a computer and an internet connection, twenty-five cents is as near to free as makes no difference.

Let's try getting the gameplay to be good, and smooth before we do stuff such as a registration system. It will most likely be implemented in the future, so just RELAX.
