Instead of making the pickaxe or something do melee damage, maybe just have a button that lets you punch someone's lights out. The left hand is never used for anything, so maybe a left handed blow to the head would be the perfect new melee.

why not just have middle mouse be the melee button?

and instead of punching with the left hand why not just smack them with the butt of the gun?

^ Or whatever they have in hand (pickaxe, shovel, block, gun, or grenade) grenade would be weird tough XD

lol ok back to the melee make the weapona do different damage.
getting hit with a gun would not do nearly as much damage as a pickaxe. and pick wouldnt do as much as shovel. the damage for the melee should go like this from least to most:
block, gun(unless he includes bayonettes in the game), grenade, pickaxe, shovel. the reason grenade is good is grenades are metal and gun butts are rubber i think. and grenades are better because of how often you have them, which is like 5 seconds within spawning
