  • Announcement Regarding the "Global Blacklist"
  • 12

    As some of you may know (some due to misfortune), a semi-global blacklist exists and has been used for the past couple weeks. There has been a lot of concern regarding the new admin features of 0.58 and the role of the global blacklist.

    I have decided that, in fairness to the users who were banned before 0.58 will be removed from the public listing. Only a few "special" cases will be kept along with any additions as of 0.58.

    In Spadille 1.4.7 there is now an option to sync with the global blacklist and append any bans to your banlist.

    Hopefully this will make a few people happy and hopefully won't repeat their mistake(s). Any bans after this point could prove even more crippling than before.

    Thank you.

    The blacklist has been managed fairly well. Only certain, long time trusted server admins are able to submit bans. Additionally, the list is publicly available so if somebody is banned unfairly, it can be debated. It's been in use for a few weeks now, but only for pyspades until now.

    What if someone spam rages the Blacklist and and bans many key and important members? Or innocent people, and such.

    The only issue I have with global blacklisting on all servers that have pyspades is that I can join some random third party pyspades server and any corrupt admin can find my IP then just add me to the global ban list for whatever reason they find pleasing.

    Then, after that, I'm banned on all servers for an unfair reason.

    They can and will be removed promptly. Also, if it's apparent that it was done without proper reason, the person can and most likely will lose the privilege to access the blacklist.

    @jazz
    Like I said, only certain admins have access to it, not every pyspades admin. However, by default, pyspades fetches the latest blacklist every 5 minutes. Not all pyspades servers have it enabled, but most do. If somebody abuses the blacklist power, the ban and/or the submitter will be dealt with with accordingly.

    No, you can. You just have to be sneaky about it, and not piss off the wrong people.

    Well reinstalling the game wouldn't do anything. The bans are by IP. As with pretty much any service which uses bans on the internet, changing the IP is a workaround. If a user is blacklisted and wants to change their IP, chances are it's to continue their habits which got them blacklisted in the first place. If that's the case, they'll more than likely be caught again. It takes a matter of second to add someone to the blacklist, so it's not much of a burden for admins.

    Ok I get it, but what if they change thier IP and thier in game name and don't know it's him, and he doesn't troll for awhile, and only trolls when no admins are on?

    However, people not using a router could easily go to cmd, ipconfig, iprelease, ***censored*** and get a new ip in a matter of seconds.

    Well with 0.58, servers can have multiple admins without the rest of the players even knowing. If someone is reported to be cheating/excessively griefing/etc, it can be looked into. If the players IP and name are nonexistent on the blacklist, it will be treated as a new person unless there is proof that ban evasion is taking place.

    @KomradeTyler
    Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. It depends on the ISP. Most of which have a limit on the number of dynamic IPs a customer can cycle through in an allotted amount of time. Regardless, they will be dealt with accordingly.

    What we really need is a registration system, possibly payment, like minecraft, even if you are ipbanned, you probably wont pay for another account and get a new IP.

    A registration system is easier said than done.

    My thoughts on a registration system

    Well said on your opinions. All that would really be required for the master server is a username, password, and email. If AoS does reach some status higher, it would not be a bad idea to get some new servers, Ben even mentioned about a registration system further up. Or they could be linked to the forum accounts?

    Just FYI: pyspades uses this global blacklist out of the box, so you don't have to enable it manually.

    I think a registration system would be great. pyspades already has one for the highscores on http://mp2.dk/aos which takes advantage of the forum registration database. It is really simple to implement ( http://code.google.com/p/pyspades/source/browse/feature_server/statistics.py ), even though there is a potential security hole if uncertified servers are able to upload statistics and whatnot (which pyspades does not allow - the master server on mp2.dk requires a password, only given to certified servers).

    In regards to AoS and and a future, proper login system (where no passwords or hashed versions of it are given to the game server): Make the client connect to the master server, log it in, send it a session ID, and then make the client pass that session ID to the game server which it checks with the master server. Success!
