  • So... Ironsights editing?
  •

Anyone know if we can do it yet, and if so how?

The ironsights file (semi.png) is not protected by a checksum anymore. Just tested it. Bad idea imo. A serverside-option would be better I think (enable/disable modified ironsights).

I've made a really basic crap one which I'll eventually replace. I'm thinking of making a goldeneye style one at some point...

There is no "ironsights.png" - it's called "semi.png" and is located in the "png"-folder inside AoS's installation folder.

And, yes: Every png-file is modifiable afaik. At least only "semi.png" had the checksum protection.

Here- a really simple one where I took the target crosshair and plopped it in semi. Make sure you back up the original semi before you replace it in the png folder.

    http://www.mediafire.com/i/?7cae666yp4dh3mu

I have a suspicion that the crosshair centres just one pixel above the shot, but having tested it it seems to work fine. I'll get round to proper ones with the rifle magnified in the corner, old school crosshair aiming style.

Not yet- at the moment it's just the hip crosshair visible when you zoom in with right mouse button. It'll do for now, but it's expremely basic.

Yes, the default iron sight is weird, there is not enough space on the top, so it's hard to make a good one.

Here's my simple modified ironsights. I made the normal crosshair a black circle with a red dot because I would always lose the standard one against the sky. The ironsight just gets rid of the gun image altogether and leaves a black circle with a red dot. I left a faint white ring on the inside of the black circle so you don't lose it against a dark background. It's probably not perfect but it works for me. Put these in the PNG folder in your AoS install directory.

Explain how this is cheating, please. So I got rid of the gun and have a slightly-lessened blindspot beneath the sight. It's hardly a huge difference. Here's more direct link to it for those interested. http://i.imgur.com/NypeX.png

It's not a cheat if everybody is allowed to do it.

Following your logic, hacking isn't cheating, nor griefing.

    allowed
    1. Admit (an event or activity) as legal or acceptable.
    2. Give (someone) permission to do something.

    It's an intended feature

And thus first cheater ironsights were made.

And thus first whiner about custom ironsights were made.

Like I've said before, it's hard to make something goos with the current system, I've tried to make a garand/M14 iron sight.
    http://i52.tinypic.com/2zob1va.png

But it looks not very good, I can't make the sight bigger, otherwise it will stick out of the picture.

    Drury, I'll bite that bait.

Hacking isn't legal because the game developer didn't intend it to be. He has made countermeasures, and it is commonly accepted that hacking isn't legal/allowed.

Griefing is legal, everybody can do it as per game design. However, the community of players frown upon same-team griefing and votekick (this was even included by the developer to combat griefing). It is commonly known that the players won't accept griefing.

Now, here is the important part:

Editing the reticule file was previously not allowed, as the game would do checksum, and do countermeasures. BUT THIS IS REMOVED.

Until it is replaced, server enforced, Ben says it's not ok or the community of players disagrees, I consider this to be allowed.

Yes, sorry Drury, but hard as it may be to believe, some people just don't like having large sections of their screen blacked out. If I want something obscuring everything below the crosshair, I'll put a book infront of my monitor, thank you very much.
