I would like to read more books that involve survival, stuff like My Side of the Mountain, which I haven't read since like 3rd grade, but maybe intended for a higher age group. Does anyone know of any survival-ish books that would be a good read? Also, any movies like The Edge and Castaway, suspenseful survival type flicks. Even zombie movies, like 28 days later, etc. This can also be a thread to talk about great movies and books, once the suggestions have been given. Thanks in advance :) |

There's a short story from Stephen King titled "Survivor Type." It's about a man stranded on an island by himself. It's pretty damn gory (like most of Stephen King's books), but it's a good read. It comes in a book containing a large group of short stories from Stephen King called "Skeleton Key." If you don't want to buy the whole book, you can easily find it in torrents/free ebooks. Also, "The Stand" from Stephen King is another really good survival book. Many consider it to be King's best narrative (although I do not agree). The unabridged version is kind of long (around 700-800 pages) but it's well worth it. |

You should watch Lost. I love that show. |

Lost sucked after season 1 ended. @Galaxy: I like Stephen King, so I will definitely look for that. I don't mind the length of any book. I've read a few 700 page books, doesn't bother me, I finish them in 2-3 days. |

I don't like television and sitcoms, Spaz. Why? Because every series that has ever been just ends up being boring after the 3rd or 4th season. Good example: Smallville. It was awesome up until like the 4th season, they just keep dragging the story out, Clark never freaking tells Lana... it's dumb. |

i recommend Ip Man, The Big Lebowski, Ip Man 2, I am not sure what else at the moment, I will probably update this post or make another one in the thread also, maybe look into reading metro 2033, if you have not already. i haven't read it, because i heard the english translation is very poor and i do not read any russian, or enough for me to be sure i'd be able to in another language. the game was pretty cool, and i have heard the book is better also, the trailer alone is a great movie: |

@Kaede Battle Royal is about a bunch of high school kids put on an island. They are pitted against each other in fights to the death to decide who is freed. It's more cooler than I make it sound, trust me. Ender's Game takes place in the future where laws are placed on how many children a family can have. Should you have more than three kids, you start paying for education and whatnot for the third child. Because of this, most people call them Thirds, and look down upon them. Ender was born as a third to take part of a program to be drafted into a military battle school, where most battles take place in zero-g. Under the watch of the "teachers", who chose him because they believe he can command a fleet to fight against the Buggers (some insectoid race that decided to Earth for unknown reasons) for the third time, he makes his way up the ranks, eventually commanding an army within the school (there are multiple commanders)--- You know what, just read it. I promise you won't be disappointed. If you are, then feel free to shoot me. Uhh, Ender's Shadow is a companion novel to Ender's Game. It tells the story of Bean, who grew up as a street rat in Rotterdam. He was picked by recruiters for battle school when he showed signs of high intelligence. He eventually finds his way into Ender's army, and along with him, a boy named Achilles, who seeks his death for seeing him in a helpless state while on the streets. I could go into this whole thing for hours, seeing as there are more than these two books in the universe of the series. Btw, Battle Royal's a movie. As for movies, try Lean On Me (about a teacher who returns to a school to find it uncivilized, and decides to return it to its former state), and The Birds (an old movie that's more funny than suspenseful, about bird that ravage a town and the entire country, eventually trapping a family in their home). |

Try reading all three books of Lord of the Rings through... ...oh wait, not what you wanted? If you want stories about people trying to survive in the outdoors (particularly in the frosty Alaskan climate) I'd recommend Jack London... I was never a huge fan of his stories myself (Eh, I like them enough that I'll read any book of his offered... but I won't go looking for more myself), but he seems a pretty good author. As a bonus, sometimes the guy involved fails to survive, which keeps things from getting bland. |

All of his books in general, or any particular one? |

The novel "Call of the Wild" is probably his most famous work. If you want a short story to sample, look up "To Build a Fire." |

I read "To Build a Fire" back in like.... 7th grade or something. |

If you're just going at it as a hobby, read what's posted above. If you're serious though, read Robinson Crusoe- the original castaway story, and Lord of the Flies, which is like Battle Royale, only it's actually believable. Tintin in Tibet and Maus make compelling graphic novel survival stories. As for films, off the top of my head I'd say Apocalypto and The Way Back. Outside that just hook up Wikipedia sometime- often the best tales of survival are the ones that actually happened. Like those of Douglas Mawson, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, Nicholas Alkemade, Vesna Vulović, or Shacketon's Endurance expedition, for example, which was turned into a pretty good 2 part mini series in 2002. |

For the lulz, read Max Brook's "The Zombie Survival Guide". XD You could also try "The Walking Dead", a Zombie Apocalypse series. I haven't expanded my literary selection in a long time, so I'm out on that department. :/ |

I'd suggest watching Die Welle - it's a great German film inspired by a real-life social experiment. For books, I usually enjoy reading non-fictional accounts of war, such as Col. Stuart Tootal's "Danger Close" or Andy McNabb's "Bravo Two Zero", but I would highly recommend the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson. Thrilling stuff. |
