I agree about the shotgun sounds.. something is slightly odd about them - but that's a minor issue and can be replaced manually.

As for the new features/tweaks, I like them. The only thing I'd say is to add a mini-tracer to the shotgun pellets, as it's hard to trace where you're being shot from or where your shots are going. Asides from that, it seems pretty good.

Few bugs (not sure if it's just pyspades or vanilla as well) in the 'You killed (etc)' messages, and asides from some lucky long-range shotgun 1-hitters, it's been alright.

As OP said, the damage indicator is broken. In my indie humble bundle opinion it doesn't fit the game and everybody would be better off without it.

Im not a fan of the damage indicator, theres no need for one in my opinion and it clutters the screen.
