  • pyspades map editor release
  •

Hey guys! Since this tool I've been working on has been sitting in the public repository for a while, I went ahead and packed it up for win32 users.

Basically, it works by editing 2D layers of Z using a brush.

It can be downloaded here: http://pyspades.googlecode.com/files/pyspades-map_editor-e940d8823d85.zip

Brief tips on using the map editor: http://code.google.com/p/pyspades/wiki/MapEditorTips

Contributions to this tool are appreciated.

In other news, a new win32 build for pyspades has also been made (check out the commit log for news).

So, in theory, we can create new brushes for this. This is obviously very basic in it's tool set. You can draw blocks like in a paint program on different height-layers. You can load and save vxl maps and, unless I missed something, not much else. I can already think of a few applications for it, such as drawing my name in HUGE letters on the maps is going to be so much easier now. ;-)

But, seriously, folks. This tool has a lot of potentional and I expect to see more maps as a result. I've heard a texturemap brush is in the works. I'd love to make a crater brush of some sort when I have time to sort it out. A brush that works over several Z layers simultaneously to dig holes and lay some debris around it. On most of my maps that is the single most time-consuming process. Picture me hovering over the map in voxed and hitting shift-E while making bomb noises and you'll not be far from reality.

Very neat. Voxxed is making me realy upset. I am not used to the DOS era keyboard layout.

Will post feedback as i use it :)

Thanks a lot for doing this.

Buffet_of_Lies: Yeah, TheGrandmaster suggested a texture brush, which should be relatively easy to implement. In regards to the crater brush: sure, it can be done, even though it requires switching between Z-layers and stuff.

JoJoeStinky: No problem! I didn't want to get used to VOXED either, so I made this instead. I love your maps, by the way :)

Suggestions are welcome on the issue tracker.

hmm the first map I generated with it:
It crashes Voxed for me, specifically when I hit M to open the map. Also crashed when I was driving into the floor.

I repeated with that map several times at it continued to have the same result, but when I tried recreating with two different maps I couldn't get it to repeat. I though I'd still let you know, might be an issue.

I'd like to see a way to set the location of voxed.exe, in a configuration file, or have it save the location after the first time its set.

It a good start/cool idea. Easier than voxed in some ways. (I still like having a 3D editor window though...and I got used to voxed quickly.)

A side view would be nice, too.

I put together a tutorial for the editor...while waiting for Ludum Dare to start :P

As features are added to PySpades Map Editor I will update the tutorial with them.

Is there anything new for this map editor? Some onion skinning plugin or some sort of scripts for doing stuff that is actually useful? I use this program a lot but I always want something different like to see things on a different axis and paint that and so on and so forth. Is anybody working on this front? Is it possible for me to script for it? Pray how, in a nutshell?

Yea, A quadview preview would really be nice.

They should take a look at this application:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/hme/files/hme/Source%20and%20Win32%20binary/hme.zip/download

has some nice features they might want to implement. i like the importer myself, it lets you blend external bitmaps into your terrain.

Cool Buffet_of_Lies, glad to help :)

right click on the image to get the mini menu, so you can turn off the mini-map.

Wish it had an undo function.

Ctl-Z seemed to undo at least one previous step.
