I've actually read about using a voxel based rendering technique versus using the traditional polygon rendering technique. I don't think that when Ben created this game that he was using a voxel based renderer so that he could make the game run more efficiently and to expand upon the possibilities of using voxel based rendering. I think he thought up what the game would be and THEN decided that voxel redering was a better solution. He's not going to rewrite the engine for the game. |

Interesting idea. I would like to see something like this in the future. Maybe as a toggleable so you can go into a 'High Quality' mode or something.. Voxels are cheap to render. It won't change much. Even a moderate 4x increase won't cost more to run. |

I don't have a problem with the idea of a higher voxel count. It would allow for higher detail in destruction, smoother terrain and pretty the game up. However, there are many downsides, such as handling the increased load for servers, backwards compatibility with old maps, etc. And how will building be handled? Still voxel by voxel (which would be a nightmare to build anything meaningful if the resolution was 4x the current or higher)? Or a large block of many voxels? How will this large block interact with the uneven ground? Plus there is the whole fact that, rather than overhauling the whole engine, Mr. Aksoy could better use the time to implement more features and improving the gameplay, which is what games are about. If a game plays like a sack of shite, all pretty graphics do is make it a pretty sack of shite (see Sniper: Ghost Warrior). Likewise with a very fun game, like AoS. TL;DR. A higher voxel resolution would be a nice bonus after the game is completed, but not essential. |

To be honest, I don't give a shit about graphics. The game could have been finished with the old 0.30s look and I wouldn't have cared, because gameplay is king. Graphics are no more important to games than paper type is to books. As long as it presents the work clearly enough, who cares what it's like? You can make it extra smooth, thicker and more glossy, but it doesn't mean diddly squat unless the actual content is worth experiencing. I guess this makes me an option B person then... |
