I watch Elfen Lied over the weekend, it was pretty good. kaede chan recommended it to me

Claymore. It's more down to earth and not "am I kawaii uguu~" anime. It's pretty gorey and bloody and full of action, and there's some teary scenes. I cried a couple times watching it. It's really got something for everyone, I think.
(That was a sincere suggestion)

If you want something not full of action, but still with a riveting story, try Spice and Wolf. It's a little romancey, and the story is awesome. It's about economics.

If you want edge-of-your-seat-thrilling, without the outrageous gore of Claymore, watch Death Note. There is no excuse not to watch it. It's great.

This "visually alternative" approach is not doing justice to anime, tho. I mean, as long as the author(s) made an effort to tell a quality story and have a point, the way its drown doesn't matter much...

My Neighbours The Yamadas is so amazing, one of my favourite childhood films.
My family used to take in Asian students, and one of them brought that movie with him from Japan and I must have watched it at least 20 times.

kaede, I didnt cry. I thought that episode 4 was sadder than at the end. By the end of series she has been treated badly so many times you kinda just expect it

I cried at the part where so and so kills himself with the girl that was his daughter right after he confessed that he was her father and that he loved her. I just bawled so hard.

Wow! Somebody else who has seen memories!? I got in in a special collectors pack along with Steamboy and LOVED it! My favorite short has to be Magnetic Rose. I wish they would make more psychological thrillers/horror for anime...but it all seems to be either action/comedy/romance. Even dramas are pretty rare it seems (no, shallow teen dramas like School Rumble don't count. Fruits baskets was WAAAY heavier ESPECIALLY in the manga, since the anime leaves a lot of things out)

Also, Cromartie High is an AWESOME anime. And Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Yeah, i know what you mean. Manga has always been a great platform for those mature and thought provoking topics but once put on television it makes it a clearer target to a critique from worried parents, social analysts and similar. Hell, there has even been a law made recently that forbids some of those goriest and potentially traumatizing scenes.

I dont have much time to watch anime this days, but ill see an occasional feature length or an OVA if i know its really good. There are certainly couple of gems from the last decade... Monster and Death Note come to mind, and basically everything Satoshi Kon made before his life was, sadly, cut short. Theres more, im sure, just cant remember atm (or dont know about).

Its a populist medium after all - you produce what makes your ratings, you dont go against the general audience. Im afraid psychological drama/horror/thrillers are 80's and 90's specialty, somewhat fallen down the pecking order recently. Back in our day... (implying a dude in his twenties can say that :\ )...

Strangely, i never saw Evangelion. I just got tired of its fanbase raving about how good and deep it is. It just put me off.

Do yourself a favor and give Evangelion a chance, you damndouce.
